Research Description
My main research interests are in the area of tissue regeneration and wound healing, utilising various barriers according to the GTR principle, various bone grafts and bone substitutes, bone morphogenetic proteins, growth factors and cell bio-technology.
I have a special interest on the outcome of the above mentioned treatment principles in specific systemic conditions like osteoporosis. For the last 7 years, I have been actively involved in several original research projects, including in vitro biomaterial testing and development, preclinical - animal experimental projects and randomised clinical trials, evaluating the effectiveness of new regenerative materials for bone and periodontal regeneration, as well as dental implant related treatment protocols.
My future research perspectives are dealing with the development of tissue regeneration protocols based on the combination of novel biomaterials / scaffolds for growth factor, cell or chemotherapeutics delivery and the already existing bone and periodontal tissue regeneration principles, such as GTR that could be applied in either healthy or systemically compromised individuals. The creation of a sound scientific link between in-vitro studies, pre-clinical animal experiments and initial clinical trials evaluating this -tissue engineering based- treatment approach, constitute my main long term research target.
Furthermore, I have been involved in the design of preclinical and clinical trials investigating:
• The influence of genetic, environmental factors, (e.g. smoking, osteoporosis) on periodontal, and implant wound healing
• The effectiveness and predictability of conventional, regenerative periodontal surgical treatment and implant treatment modalities in specific categories of patients like diabetic and osteoporotic patients.
• The effectiveness of new regenerative materials for bone and periodontal regeneration as well as new dental implants in controlled preclinical experiments and randomised clinical trials.
• The evaluation of different types of periodontal surgery in terms of clinical and patient based outcomes
